MIM Process


1. Overview
Metal injection molding (MIM) is a typical cross-disciplinary product that combines two completely different processing technologies (plastic injection molding and powder metallurgy) into one. It enables designers to get rid of the traditional constraints and obtain low-cost, special-shaped stainless steel, nickel, iron, copper, titanium, and other metal parts by plastic molding, so that they have greater design freedom than many other production processes.

3. Raw materials
Special metal powder (micron grade) is mixed with high-quality high-molecular polymers to form a MIM-specific feed through a precisely controlled preparation process. Compared with traditional powder metallurgy, the particle size and extremely low impurity content of the metal powder (micron level) ensure that the MIM sintered density reaches 98% of the theoretical density; and a variety of specially formulated polymers can provide good injection properties. Fluidity also guarantees efficient degreasing capabilities.

4. Injection
The MIM feed is heated by an injection machine and filled evenly into the mold cavity. After cooling, the MIM injection blank is obtained. The key to this process is the matching of a mold that matches the characteristics of MIM.

5. Degreasing
The main binder in the injection blank is gradually and efficiently removed by a professional degreasing furnace. The remaining skeleton binder maintains the shape of the product so that the degreased part moves into the firing stage.

6. Sintering
In the vacuum furnace or atmosphere furnace of MIM, the skeleton binder is removed, and the metal powder is densified into a complete metal body at a temperature close to the melting point. After cooling, a sintered part having a shape close to the finished product is obtained.
